Determining whether a gun, be it an air gun or AK47, fired a given ammunition component is not a straightforward exercise. It takes years of training and familiarity of the different types of tool marks that can be imparted by a gun onto the ammunition component and how to assess their significance. This is a job for an experienced forensic scientist. Misidentifications do happen – where there is tool mark evidence linking projectiles and cartridge cases to guns this should be scrutinised.
